This is an off-center photograph which gives a nice sense of the swelling curve of the Scallop. Notice how the gold leaf has been hand rubbed to reveal the black lacquer ground beneath. 

Here we applied gold leaf on top of a black lacquer ground and carefully remove the leaf on the highpoints. This lends a wonderfully rich character to the piece. No two will ever be exactly the same. Various ground colors can also be used, black and red being typical of Chinese gold leaf. Finishes such as this are not available elsewhere.
