The gold leaf in this example has been worn off by discrete abrasion to reveal the black lacquer base coat over which the gold was applied. We can use other colors of lacquers as you wish. The Chinese also used red lacquer under their gold leaf. This antiquing effect implies age, tranquility and veneration. Just the thing for a contemporary setting.
